Meet Kate Aguirre, a local Mom of soon-to-be two boys, Bobby (4) and Mason (due November). Kate and her husband Danny are raising their family in Twentynine Palms. Originally from the San Fernando Valley, high rent prices and the the increasingly dangerous city they were living in drove them to the Morongo Basin 7 years ago and they haven’t looked back! Her love for fashion and the need for local maternity wear options inspired her to open Fashions by Lizzie, a Maternity Boutique in downtown Twentynine Palms.
Tell us Kate…
What is your favorite thing about living in the Morongo Basin?
No traffic, and the beautiful sunrises and sunsets.
What do you love to do with your family around town?
We love to take our son to the park and the drive in. If we feel like a driving, we like to go to the Living Desert.
Name 3 things in town you can’t live without…
Smith’s Ranch Drive in
Jack in the Box
What’s been your favorite “Mommy Moment” so far?
My favorite mommy moment so far has been spending time with my son, I have wanted to be a mom for so long. I’m just enjoying each and every second with him, hearing him laugh, seeing him smile, and watching him experience new things and learning. With being pregnant I love feeling my little guy move, I love feeling his kicks.
What’s your favorite thing to do when you need some “Me Time”?
I don’t get much me time, but when I do I like to go get my nails done or sleep right now since I’m pregnant.
What led you to open Fashions by Lizzie?
Since the age of three, I knew I wanted to do something in fashion. I would talk to my Opa (my Grandfather) about having a store called “Fashions by Lizzie” one day. I eventually got my degree in apparel manufacturing management and knew I wanted to do something with it. I saw a need for maternity wear in the Morongo Basin. On all the Facebook pages I saw mommies asking for maternity clothing and when I was pregnant with my first, I would have to drive down the hill and spend so much money on maternity clothes. I told my husband I wanted to open a maternity store. He said “okay let’s do it!” and since I already had a name picked out, Fashions by Lizzie came about.
With a lot of local residents and the military being on a fixed income, I knew the clothing had to be fashionable AND affordable. I hand pick all my items and work with local distributors to offer unbeatable prices. Fashions by Lizzie is still growing and I’m always getting in new items to meet demand. It’s always going to be a work in progress.
What types of maternity items does Fashions by Lizzie carry?
I carry everything from dresses, t-shirts, tank tops, sweaters, shorts, pants, formal wear, underwear, bras, maternity belts and pregnancy pillows, to beautiful full-length maternity shoot dresses. I’m also just starting to carry children’s clothing from Cat & Jack and Carters, lots more to come! I love to receive feedback on what to bring into the store, so feel free to let me know. There’s always something new.
How does the store help you connect with other Moms?
We can all relate! I know what pregnant mommies need, being pregnant myself, and I love being able to provide an affordable place for mommies to shop. Fashions by Lizzie also hosts Prenatal and Mommy & Me Yoga classes once a month, but as the demand for classes increase, we hope to offer more.
What do you love about owning your own business?
The best part of owning my own business is being able to be with my son, and being able to enjoy this pregnancy with a lot less stress. I love showing my son that you need to follow your dreams. He takes so much pride in helping me at the store, whether it’s passing out waters, giving cards or pressing the numbers on the register.
How do you balance owning Fashions by Lizzie & being a Mommy?
My son is always at the store with me, but on Sundays we are by appt. only so we can have a family day. It is our day to either go out or just stay in and hang out and do whatever Bobby wants to do. Most of the time it’s swimming or playing outside. We also work on reading and writing to get him prepared for school when we have down time at the store.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve gotten from another Mom?
Sleep when the baby sleeps… Just kidding, it’s don’t sweat the small stuff! Enjoy every second you can with your little because it goes by super fast and you can’t get that time back. It’s so true! My son will be 5 in September and I miss him being so little, I blinked and now he’s a big kid.
